Our adventure started on a weekend when we were already exhausted…two consecutive days and nights spent moving apartments, topped off with a pub crawl the night before that left us hungover and unable to stomach anything. That’s when we stumbled upon the holy grail: Muthu’s.
We’ve DoorDashed and UberEats’d from here before, but visiting in person is an entirely different experience, one I’d highly recommend. The food was phenomenal. I’ve had Tamil (South Indian) cuisine across 6–7 countries, and even back home in Dubai where there’s a massive Tamil diaspora, nothing comes close to what Muthu creates. His dosas and vadas genuinely rival what you’d find in Tamil Nadu itself.
The vada is handmade (one of the only places in Wellington that doesn’t rely on frozen, premade vadas or dosa batter). Everything is fresh, authentic, and made with real skill. Muthu is not just an incredible cook, he’s also a genuinely great guy to chat with.
Me and the Mrs will definitely be coming back whenever we’re craving a true taste of home. 🙌⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amazing food ... flavorful and yummy roti canai (especially the egg roto canai). Portion sizes are huge for the price of them. The masala tea is super delicious - highly recommend that. I will need to come back and try more of the menu :)

I found Muthus via Google search for "South Indian restaurant near Wellington airport" during an overnight visit to Wellington this weekend.
Decided to go here based on its reviews and high rating.
We ordered a Diwali VegerarianThali which was a special menu for 4 days.
1 Thali was shared between 2 of us and came with roti/6 Curries/basmati rice/flavoured rice, pickle, raita and even Glab Jamun as dessert.
Absolutely enough food for my sister and I and value for money.
Absolutely amazed at the authenticity and quality of the food.It has the best South Indian food in NZ.
Freshly made to order and every dish had its unique taste. You could tell that all veges as locally sources and not the frozen stuff.
The owner was very lovely and was happy to add/cha ge things as per our request.
Definately was value for money.
It was so good that we ended up going there again the next day to try the non-veg Thali.
The Rasam was soo good and fresh absolutely divine.
We ended up bringing some back home to Auckland.
It's a no miss for us next time we are in Wellington.
For people who eat halal meat, he advised he sources his meat from Newtown Halal meats and doesnt have pork in menu.

We stopped in for a late lunch on Saturday and the place had a steady stream of customers either eating in or taking away. My boyfriend and I both ordered the dosa and agreed it was some of the best we’d had. The service was super attentive (given the chef / owner was the only one working that shift), the food was delicious, and the restaurant and toilets were nice and clean. We’ve both happily agreed to make this a new regular.

My wife and I visited Wellington while we are on our North Island holiday in New Zealand. While here, we craved some comfort food and we are so happy we did, because it led us to this amazing restaurant. We can vouch that the food is absolutely amazing. We actually had food from there twice (dined in once, and had an uber delivery for the other). We tried the chicken 65, chicken kothu roti/parota, chicken biryani and the murtabak. All the dishes were brilliant. Full of flavour and freshly made. We highly recommend trying this place if you are looking for some authentic south Indian or Malaysian food. Thank you to the owner for his friendly service. Worth supporting this nice little restaurant. Venue is clean, well lit and welcoming.
