Our adventure started on a weekend when we were already exhausted…two consecutive days and nights spent moving apartments, topped off with a pub crawl the night before that left us hungover and unable to stomach anything. That’s when we stumbled upon the holy grail: Muthu’s.
We’ve DoorDashed and UberEats’d from here before, but visiting in person is an entirely different experience, one I’d highly recommend. The food was phenomenal. I’ve had Tamil (South Indian) cuisine across 6–7 countries, and even back home in Dubai where there’s a massive Tamil diaspora, nothing comes close to what Muthu creates. His dosas and vadas genuinely rival what you’d find in Tamil Nadu itself.
The vada is handmade (one of the only places in Wellington that doesn’t rely on frozen, premade vadas or dosa batter). Everything is fresh, authentic, and made with real skill. Muthu is not just an incredible cook, he’s also a genuinely great guy to chat with.
Me and the Mrs will definitely be coming back whenever we’re craving a true taste of home. 🙌⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Amazing food ... flavorful and yummy roti canai (especially the egg roto canai). Portion sizes are huge for the price of them. The masala tea is super delicious - highly recommend that. I will need to come back and try more of the menu :)

I’m a tourist visiting from Sydney, and I can honestly say I haven’t had South Indian food this authentic even back home. Muthu’s clearly relies on traditional recipes, and you can taste the care and heritage in every dish.
We ordered the egg kothu, and the team kindly added extra veggies just the way we wanted — such thoughtful service. The vadas were exquisite, perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside. And the masala dosa… absolutely unforgettable. The flavours were unique, vibrant, and genuinely unrivalled.
If you’re in Wellington and craving real South Indian cuisine, Muthu’s is an absolute must‑visit. A beautiful blend of authenticity, warmth, and incredible taste.
Shoutout to Muthu’s wife (and his first born) who juggle their job (and school) and helping out Muthu with front end stuff.
If and when I come back to this lovely city I’ll surely stop to have a hearty meal here.

This was one of the best Indian food I have ever had! I don’t eat spicy, but this food had just the perfect balance between all the amazing flavors, without being too spicy. I highly recommended and will definitely be back! Thank you for this delicious lunch!
