Tried this fish n chips place. love the crispy butter! Clean spot and friendly owner. Definitely worth coming back.

Terrible today. Oil is too old, saving money by not replacing it when due? So the potato fritters and fish batter were just thick oily and brown, and full of oil. I couldn't even taste the fish due to the oily thick brown batter. Makes me feel sick a bit. Fish was small, doesn't bother me, potato fritters small, but cheap, that's ok, hot dogs small, a bit rubbish but ok, chips were ok, But when you are being served oily brown batter that's thick and full of oil that's dominant and taking away the pleasure of having fish and chips, it's truly awful. I've had so much better from this shop in the past. What is going on? Is it that they are trying to save money by not changing the oil and using it way beyond when it should be changed? DaveH, Mairangi Bay. UPDATE: I go there more often now. Oil has been replaced! You need to find out what the standard fish is that they have on offer. Gem fish wasn't that nice, trevally was ok, but if you upgrade from $6 normal to $8 you can select snapper. I had a good chat with them. They weigh out the fish at 100 grams. A bit small but that's ok. They weigh the chips too. But that doesn't bother me. I still need to ask them to pull out of the hot oil the crumbed fish early and then it's excellent. If you don't, and in Dec 2025 I forgot and the fish was overcooked and dry. I guess their default is to make it safe and cook longer, so you Must Must! intervene, but providing you do then it's really good 👍. But the best I've come across to date is Basil's in Masterton. That's the gospel for f&c, and I'm always on the lookout to beat it!

This was such a nice place! Me and my dad came back from a long day of work and we just wanted to have a nice swim and some fish and chips, and we chose a random place, so we came here. Fish is PERFECT, chips are just MUAH! I really recommend this place

We placed an order over the phone, they said it’d be 20 mins until the food was ready. We arrived 20 mins after the call, waited a few mins and asked where our order was. They hadn’t started it yet and it was at the back of the cue. They said they were going to prioritise it. We left and went back after 10 mins, asked again and they still hadn’t started the order. When I asked they said maybe another 20 mins. Once we got the food, we left, got to our destination to find a few items of our order missing and ‘replaced’ with other stuff, without communicating it to us. The fish were very nice but the lack of communication was very disappointing. I understand that they don’t want to turn customers away but just be honest and say a realistic time.

Judge for yourself- one lot of chips ($5) and one snapper ($8) as pictured. Portions (in my opinion) on the smaller side for the chips, but the fish was well portioned. The shop was nice and clean, very open- open kitchen lots of space to sit or stand to wait for your takeaways. Overall good experience. And the beach being just across the road.
